Sea Air Space 2025
South Australia’s defence and space research and innovation ecosystem
South Australia is a global leader in defence and space research, with a rich history of supporting the Australian Defence Force and pioneering advancements in space technology.
The Defence Innovation Partnership (DIP) drives defence-related research and development in South Australia by fostering collaboration between Defence SA, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), local universities, and industry.
DIP builds research collaboration to deliver innovative solutions by:
- Connecting researchers, industry, and Defence
- Supporting defence-relevant collaborations through grants
- Attracting R&D funding to South Australia
- Translating defence and national security R&D
With extensive networks, the DIP team actively seeks opportunities to enhance defence-relevant research and development.

South Australian research and academia
Key centres and institutions
South Australia’s three universities, the University of Adelaide, Flinders University, and the University of South Australia, are leaders in defence, space, and advanced technologies. With cutting-edge research centres in areas like robotics and autonomous systems, AI, and space technology, these institutions are driving innovation to support national security and economic growth.
Key Projects
DIP offers the Collaborative Research Fund and Activator Fund to support defence-relevant innovation and collaboration across government, industry and academia.
These funds are available for projects that best meet the Defence Innovation Partnership criteria for desirability, viability and feasibility.
DIP also works with the South Australian Space Industry Centre to deliver the South Australian Space Collaboration and Innovation Fund to support the development of innovative South Australian space capability.
So far, we’ve provided around $8 million in funding to support local defence innovation.
